Request to submit information on the progress made in the implementation of the Specific Work Plan on Coral Bleaching

In its decision X/29 (paragraph 74), the Conference of the Parties (COP) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) requested the Executive Secretary to prepare a report on the progress made in the implementation of the specific work plan on coral bleaching, adopted in decision VII/5 (appendix 1 of annex I), and make it available for consideration at the sixteenth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice, scheduled for 30 April to 4 May 2012. The COP requested that the report should also identify barriers to implementation and ways to overcome them as well as identify specific actions to mobilize financial resources and provide guidance to relevant financial institutions, including the Global Environment Facility, to support the implementation of the specific work plan on coral bleaching. Pursuant to this request, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has compiled the relevant information submitted through third and fourth national reports. This initial compilation would require, however, updating and further elaboration by relevant Parties and organizations.

In this regard, the Executive Secretary wishes to invite Parties, other Governments, relevant organizations, and indigenous and local communities, to kindly provide information on the progress made in the implementation of the specific work plan on coral bleaching, adopted in decision VII/5 (appendix 1 of annex I), on barriers to implementation and ways to overcome them as well as specific actions to mobilize financial resources to the Secretariat ([email protected] or fax +1 514 288-6588) at your earliest convenience, but no later than 15 October 2011. In submitting the information, please focus on updating and further elaborating the relevant information submitted through the third and fourth national reports, as appropriate.

Information can be submitted using the attached table format and/or in any other format as appropriate. Kindly send us also the electronic copy of the submission for easy compilation.
