Our Regional Initiatives

The International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) has since its inception in 1994 encouraged regional cooperation to define regional needs and priorities. Several regional workshops were held throughout the world in the late 1990 and early 2000s, including in East Asia, Australasia, the Western Indian Ocean and the Middle East. View the ICRI regional meetings.

There was however limited continuity of the discussion and policies developed in these workshops, and ICRI’s regional focus remained dormant for close to a decade.

Since the mid-2000s, the concept of regional activities has been revived in East Asia, led by the Government of Japan.
