The United Nations has proclaimed a Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) to support efforts to reverse the cycle of decline in ocean health and gather ocean stakeholders worldwide behind a common framework that will ensure ocean science can fully support decision-makers at all levels in creating improved conditions for the sustainable development of the Ocean.

The 2nd Global Planning Meeting celebrates the culmination of a two-year process engaging thousands of stakeholders across science, policy, business, and civil society, working together to build new transformative, science-based actions in support of the 2030 Agenda.

This Forum will gather approximately 150 key ocean leaders, champions and stakeholders from all actors, regions and generations. A combination of plenaries and break-out groups will facilitate international, interdisciplinary discussions across sectors and stakeholders with a focus on delivering the Decade six societal outcomes through action-oriented partnerships and cooperation. Participants will shape the enabling environment required for a successful launch and implementation of the Decade, starting with the Decade’s contribution to the forthcoming 2nd UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon.

Plenary sessions will be streamed live.

Adaptation strategies and science-informed policy responses to global change are urgently needed. As mandated by the UN General Assembly, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO coordinates the Decade’s preparatory process, inviting the global ocean community to plan for and commit to the next ten years in ocean science and technology to deliver, together, the Ocean We Need for the Future We Want!

Express your interest to participate here. Please note the deadline for application is 12 February 2020 (11.59 pm, Paris time).
